I'm Totally Puzzled I Need your Input?

Ok this is really strange...
I have made a whole variety
of Vintage Style Easter Baskets
this year....

Each one unique and
One-of-a-kind...

I've added all sorts of Embellishments
Down to the sweetest little details...

I've shared them on my Blog
on and off for a couple of weeks now...

I have them in my Etsy Shop
Priced @$16 with free shipping

I've sold a few there....

But my largest orders have been
in Small Boutiques
One gal bought $78
worth of these
and just could not make up her
mind on which she liked best...
maybe Etsy is not about Handmade
and more about supplies?

My question to you fellow crafters...
Why are they not blowing out of My Etsy Shop?
Is it the Price? Or is it that most shoppers on Etsy
are crafters themselves and figure
the can make their own?
Or maybe there just not what buyers want?
This is the million dollar Question...
Input appreciated...

Diane, I think they are sooo cute and I love all of the vintage items you used. I have been having the same problem on Etsy this season. I have lowered my prices, tried everything. Very surprising. I dont know if it is because Easter is so late or the long winter or the economy! You are right, it is a million dollar question! I think your price point is great, especially with free shipping!! Congratulations on all the boutique sales, that is wonderful!
Hugs,
Amy

Hi Diane, I wanted to order your pink chick and purple chick and vintage inspired sweet & simple Easter basket $40.00 total. Is it possible to send a check? I just can't imagine why these aren't flying out of your shop. You certainly are my FAVORITE vintage artist!
BY THE WAY!!!!! Remember all those awful mystery giveaways I had when I first began to blog that drove you nuts!!! Well, you have won my Patriotic Trio!!!
I was so hoping to see you name as I have wanted you to have something made by me. Also find in the box your little pink bird as well as three red ones!
Happy Easter to You! Elizabeth

Diane,
I agree with Amy...it is the economy....I would have bought one in a heartbeat a year ago...in fact I did! LOL But my husband is still out of work, no $$$ for these types of purchases right now.....I have seena HUGE change on Ebay as well...not near the buying or selling of fun things! Inventory way down....I love these baskets! Sandy

There are so many lovely things on Etsy - and I've found many of your items that I would love to buy. It's the shipping to Canada that's the deal breaker for me.
Your items are truly beautiful!

I think money is tight with most everyone...and we try to make more of the cute things we see and like. These are definitely worth what you are asking...shipping is outrageous! I hope things improve soon and we can buy pretty things that we want! Happy Spring! ♥

Diane ~ I think they're gorgeous and have been looking at them for a couple of weeks now! For me personally, Spring has yet to arrive so Easter seems so far off. I'll order one tomorrow for one of my US friends. I have to get into my office 'cause I don't remember my Etsy password! Your work is perfect and your prices are fine!

Maybe it's all of the above! I'm wondering if folks aren't "loving" the handmade treasures so much any more.. or at this time. Maybe it's the price thing too with the recession STILL here! They are very sweet!
Warmly,
deb

I know, no help!!!

Well I sure don't know the problem unless it can be the above two comments about the economy. I flew right over to Etsy and bought one of your cutie baskets. So darling I love your work. I've been buying quite a few unique items on Etsy lately it's a great place to shop.

I don't sell on ETSY and have only purchased a couple of vintage items! Another Blogger just asked the same question today as to why her candles weren't selling! I think the times are just a bit tough with gas prices etc. Hang in there, there is still time left before Easter:)

Have a blessed day, HUGS!

Hi Diane
I've had the same thing with my etsy store. I think it could have something to do with economy. I also think Etsy is so saturated with lovely handmade goodies. I also think that sometimes just seeing something in "person" makes leaving a purchase more difficult than dreaming about wanting to buy it when you see it online...or in a magazine. I'm finding that these days if I want something I like to have it right now.

Your baskets are adorable and if I saw them in a boutique I would so want to buy one...they are lovely.

Judi
p.s. how do you go about getting them into boutique shops? I would like to do that....but I always wish I had something to do that part for me...*s*..

They're adorable, Diane - I just think people are cutting back on their fun purchases. (Gas prices can't be helping things right now). It seems like you're still doing well, though - maybe just not as well as you'd like. It's not the quality, that's for sure.

I think the ladies are right...the economy is the culprit. These little baskets are simply delightful and at a good price point!

Sandy said...

I agree with the last two ladies.. Your work is fantastic, the baskets are darling,but....(here's the old BUT) I just don't think people have the extra money to "play" with.
It's all just too tight.

And, perhaps they think that can make something "close" to yours with things they have laying around.

That would be my guess. I'm anxious to hear what the other ladies have to say.
I sure hope they start realizing it's getting close and they need to purchase.
Good Luck!

If we knew the answer to the million dollar question, we would all be millionaires! Who knows? On my website I keep selling stuff that even I don't get and then stuff I think is great, I don't sell. Longevity has a lot to do with it, I don't know how long you have had your Etsy shop, but on my website, 50% of my business is repeat customers, the same with my antiques booth. I have had the booth for 8 years and it is the same people that buy. I think if you can weather the wait, the longer your are out there the sales will come. Of course with seasonal stuff that is no help! Which is precisely why I do not do seasonal.

Diane these are so beautiful. I cannot imagine why they sit. I was at an antique store today and we were talking about what was selling and what wasn't. She told me the these type of things sell right off the shelf. Seems to me it must be the economy. I think your work is spectacular. It is a great question though...hope you get lots of great answers...Renee

Diane, You have 3 baskets that I just love, plus three other things for Easter. My husband has been out of a job for a year and a half and is now in school. I only allow myself to get one thing and haven't decided which one. Please don't quit offering them on Etsy. I love all of your creations. When I decide, you will be hearing from me!

You know I love all of your gorgeous and unique creations...they are truly one of a kind and beautiful....perhaps you are right in that many people are looking for supplies to make things themselves??? I am not so sure either! The economy is challenging for most people and that does curtail the extra spending "fun" money! ♥

They are very cute but it is still early, I ad some wonderful vintage pocket Valentines and they didn't sell until the week before Valentine's Day on Etsy. When I started participating in swaps and people could see my work things started to pick up, that helps. Things will improve eventually, don't give up, they are really sweet. Hugs Marilou

I'm leaning towards the "economy" thing. Your creations are some of the most beautifully detailed I've ever seen, so certainly it's not the quality. : )

Hey Diane,

Your product is really cute and your price is as fair as it gets. My experience with both Etsy and Ebay is this - ya just never know.

Ebay gets much more hits, but much more competition. Etsy is my go-to place for cute, but it's hard to find things there (I think because of all of the tags we're allowed to add). I'll have things sell really quick on Ebay, but sit in my Etsy.

And of course, the economy is hitting us all.

This has absolutely nothing to do with your talented work for sure.

Love ya!
Jill

Oh Diane, I love everything you make! I'm just dirt poor and almost always have been! I do a lot of window shopping but I'm content. ♥

Hello,I'm a new follower to your site.I love your blog and all your pretties.I've read all the ladies comments and comming from a small time crafters point of view, oh yes and, I'm not rich nor talented.I think most people browse those sites to get ideas and learn what they want to try to make themselves.Thats what I do.If I had tons of money it might be different. If your having a good ol' time though keep enjoying.

Hi Diane, I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in too. I don't think it has to do with your product or pricing, they are cuter than cute and your prices are very reasonable! I too, think it is about the economy. Not only are gas prices going up everyday but groceries as well. Holy cow, if the grocery gremlin hasn't hit your area yet, hang on to your hat!!! I think too it's a psychological thing, whether they realize it or not, people are backing away from hitting the "BUY" button out of fear/guilt spending money when you don't know what is going to happen next. I say if boutiques are buying, then I'd search out more of that clientele! HTH, hugs, Nan

Diane: First, your items are gorgeous. LOVE everything you create. I have found that ANY seasonal items I have made from Halloween until now, have been a bust. If you check out my shop, you will see that things are not holiday treasures. That is what sells. Anything for the Easter holiday isn't selling. I have a whole batch of supplies for things I was going to create and I think I'm going to pack them away.

As far as shops go, in my travels NO ONE knows of ETSY. So, if a person isn't an online shopper and sees one of your gorgeous creations in a store, they are unique and beautiful so they sell. That's just my .02. I think I'm done with holiday goodies on Etsy.

I agree with all the above...plus when ebay went up on their fees there was a mass exodus over to etsy and there are sooo many places there now your store tends to get lost. I've started selling only vintage now basically. I wish I had more than a few French newspapers left because I have a waiting list for those! They sell almost immediately. Who knows? Your little basket are wonderful but who has extra $$$ anymore? Congrats on the boutique sale. Really love your blog - I'm going to look around now! xoxo Nancy

Diane, sorry to hear your sales are down. I love all your pretty little things! It isn't you... it truly is this horrible economy. Prices are going up and tons of people struggling with unemployed right now. (including dh) I know everything will get better eventually, so hang in there.

Hi Diane, Great post. I guess the bottom line is: who really knows. Ebay's rules for sellers is pretty tough. Etsy has so many handcrafted artists. What's a girl to do. Hope & prayers. I don't know of much else. We obviously need something. If your work isn't selling, that bode well for the rest of us. Beautiful things will always find their way. I know yours will too. Have a happy pink week.

I am no expert on why your stuff isn't selling on Etsy but I am a HUGE impulse buyer..And I couldn't figure out how to get to your Etsy store from your blog...so this may or may not be part of the reason..You have very cute stuff but I would definitely rank your items as impulse purchases..After 5 minutes of searching, I moved on..
Please - remember....IMHO - in my humble opinion.,,,

Terry said...

I did find your Etsy button but it didn't really look like this is where you would go to buy them...Do you add hyper links in your blog that will take them directly to buying them? Your stuff is cute and even though gas prices are climbing and people are buying less these days, I believe it's all in the marketing...
